16± ACRE ORGANIC FARM ON SAN JUAN ISLAND, WASHINGTON
SYNERGY FARM - This historic 16-acre market farm provides a turnkey operation. It includes an upgraded, classic farmhouse with 4 plus bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, a fully restored 6,000 sq. ft. barn, a water tower apartment suitable for an on-site manager/caretaker or guests, full living quarters in a “bunkhouse” for interns or workers, a modern on-site farm store, a restored chicken coop with a large enclosed chicken yard, and an ongoing farming operation that includes a full range of vegetables year-round, plus berries, an orchard, an herb garden, laying hens, pastured broiler chickens, about eight acres of pasture for sheep and hay, a high-capacity irrigation system, a state-approved commercial kitchen for value added products, an extensive inventory of farm equipment and tools, and much more! Sales outlets include the farm store, a 50-member CSA, the local farmers’ market, and local restaurants. About the Soils: The pasture land in general has a combination of clay (which is rich in nutrients) and rocky loam. Much of it is used for sheep pasture and is grazed (and mulch mowed) for two years out of every three. In the third year it produces about 400 bales of high quality hay. The soils in the 168 growing beds around the barn have very high quality planting soil that have been built up over the last seven years. One of the major advantages of the bio-intensive method is that it utilizes double digging (to 24 inches deep) and heavy composting to build soil. They have been able to add about one inch a year to the topsoil in many of the beds. The annual soil tests, which include many trace elements as well, show that they have a balanced soil with a neutral pH and very high organic matter content (well over 10 percent). They have had to do very little in the way of additional soil amendments over the years, except for nitrogen (mostly in the form of compost tea). They also cover crop the beds in grains and clovers to maintain soil quality. Finally, they are able to produce an abundance of compost on site, thanks to the nitrogen-rich chicken bedding from the flock of (currently) 85 laying hens, as well as hay from the pasture and green material from the lawns, chicken yard, the pasture area used for our broiler poultry, and cover crops, along with wastes from our planting beds. Price: $1,495,000. MLS #224505. For more information about the farm, go to www.synergyfarm.com.
